That's What She Said 3.6.19
It’s finally March - the time of year when most of us can start really looking forward to warmer weather, we get to “spring ahead” (this Sunday!) and we are thatmuchcloser to the Mueller report coming out (here’s hoping). There are also lots of mid-season shows coming back! Here are a few things I want you to know about this week:
Leaving Neverland (HBO)
It feels weird to recommend a documentary about child abuse, but I’m going to do it. HBO’s newest documentary Leaving Neverland debuted Sunday night and it was every bit as disturbing as you can imagine. This two-part, four-hour journey features the graphic and sad accounts of Wade Robson and Jimmy Safechuck (and their families) who were befriended by Michael Jackson as pre-teens and were never the same again. Their recollections of abuse suffered by Jackson and the impact it had on their adult lives was hard to watch (you’ll literally feel like you need a shower after). Following the conclusion of the doc on Monday night, Oprah Winfrey also held an hour long special, After Neverland, featuring Robson, Safechuck and filmmaker Dan Reed to talk more about the insidiousness of sexual abuse and how predators groom and seduce their victims. Overall, a devastating subject matter but important to learn more about. If you have a kid you might want to watch. If you put celebrities on a pedestal you might want to think again.
(UGHHHHHH OK the rest of this post will be fun stuff, I promise.)
Russian Doll (Netflix)
I binged it and, well, it’s sort of hard to describe. Russian Doll is produced by Amy Poehler and stars the awesome Natasha Lyonne (of The Slums of Beverly Hills and Orange is the New Black). The show’s basic premise is Nadia (Lyonne), at a party in NYC for her 36th birthday, keeps dying, then keeps returning to the start of the party. She might make it as long as a whole day past the reset point, but she always dies again eventually - in progressively crazier ways. A darker and bleaker Groundhog Day? Not quite. Just watch it.
Better Things Season 3 (FX)
I have pushed this one on y’all before, and I’m not letting up. Season 3 just debuted on FX last week and The New York Times said of the first few episodes: “‘Better Things,’ a comedy rooted in slice-of-life naturalism, trusts that the little stuff is enough. There is nothing on TV today that represents [human existence, the labor of love] better or more gorgeously.” So there. Thursdays on FX.
Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend Podcast (Earwolf)
This podcast debuted in November but I just stumbled upon it this week so I’m adding it to my list. I’ve always loved Conan and he always cracks me up. This podcast is no different. He hosts guests like Will Ferrell, Stephen Colbert, Timothy Olyphant and Mark Maron. The only problem with this show is if you listen in the car or with your ear buds on you’ll be laughing like a maniac and scaring the shit out of everyone around you.
WTForecast??! App (William King, Developer)
”What the Forecast?!!” is an accurate weather app that will tell you, in the most vulgar of ways, how nasty it is outside. When you roll over in the morning, check your phone and WTForecast tells you “there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to accidentally key your friggin’ car with your nipples” you know it’s best just to go back to bed and try again tomorrow. If you care, WTForecast??! won a 2018 People’s Choice Webby Award. It’s legit.
Have a great weekend!
P.S. Idris Elba is hosting Saturday Night Live this Saturday. I’ll gush about that next week.
