BOSSY's Favorite Things | Holiday Gift Guide 2017

Bossys Fave Things 2017.jpg

Well, the holidays have snuck up on us again. Time to dust off your wish list and vacuum the cobwebs out of your brain to come up with creative and USEFUL gift ideas for friends and family. Whether you're shopping for yourself (#noshameinthatgame) or buying for others, I've got a few ideas here that could fit the bill. I'm not as rich, or as powerful, or as well-staffed, or as well read as Oprah, but I've got just as many opinions. Here are BOSSY's Favorite Things for the holiday season 2017:

1. Huzi Infinity Travel Pillow
What's one of the first thing that comes to mind when the holiday season hits? No, it's not booze, although that jumped to mind for me too. It's TRAVEL. Most of us have to travel somewhere to get back to our families and it's no fun. Give that old-style neck pillow you all have to your dog (pro tip: it works better than a cone) and wrap one of these around yourself -- or your loved one - instead. It's soft! It's flexible! It's warm! Buy here.

2. Ina Garten Cookbooks
I may have said this before but it's because I mean it: Ina Garten, aka "The Barefoot Contessa," is the Yoda of every day, simple, classic cooking. Her books are beautiful, there are photos of every recipe and the instructions are very clear. Her recipes cover a lot of the basics (think steaks, au gratin potatoes, roasted vegetables, homemade dressings etc.) and some fun dishes and desserts too. Sure you can find all the recipes online, but they won't look as lovely on your bookshelf or on your coffee table. Buy here or here.

3. Games
I highly suggest having lots of games on hand to keep people from fighting. Here are a few I like - depending on the audience:

  • Cards Against Humanity Green Box. CAH just released the green pack - their largest new expansion yet. PS they are also saving America, so there's that. Buy/donate here.
  • Shut the Box. It's like Yahtzee...but not really. Mindless fun for hours. Buy here.
  • Trivial Pursuit Classic Edition. Classic look and a mix of new and old questions. Always a good time. Buy here.

4. Big City Hunt Local Scavenger Hunts
If you and your friends are into scavenger hunts, mazes, escape rooms or other hands-on challenges, this is for you! Rediscover your city (i.e. run around it like your hair is on fire) using clues to solve riddles at landmarks and hidden sites. The Big City Hunt package includes different roles and activities, custom challenges, an online judge that rates your photos and ways to interact with others in your city. Learn more and buy here.

5. Subscription to Streaming Live TV
It's finally here: non-cable live TV and DVR! The perfect gift for the cord-cutter in your life. And trust me, the addition of the DVR function in these services makes this a game changer. I'll be doing a more in-depth comparison of the pluses and minuses of each soon, but for now, learn more about YouTube TV here and Sling TV here.

6. Hometown Maps Pint Glasses
For anyone who is nostalgic for their hometown, favorite city/vacation spot or alma mater AND likes to drink, this is for you! Put your love on glassware! This company does it all: I like the pint glasses but there are stemless wine glasses, rocks glasses, carafes and mule mugs as well. Learn more and buy here.

7. eBags Mother Lode Weekender Convertible Junior Backpack
For anyone who travels often, and who makes a concerted effort to pack smart/light, this is the bag to have. On sale now for $80 (down from $120!). Buy here.

8. J.A. Henckels International Classic 8" Chef's Knife
Pssst: You won't be no Barefoot Contessa without the right tools! The first and most important thing you need in your kitchen to rock any Ina recipe is a decent knife. This Henckels Chef's Knife just got a big stamp of approval from Epicurious AND is only $47 (or $38 on Amazon). Buy here.

9. Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser
Need help being a calmer, more balanced member of society (or know someone who does)? The Aromatherapy Diffuser to the rescue! Fill it with essential oils like eucalyptus, lemongrass or, my personal favorite, lavender (known for its calming and relaxing properties), hit the hay and let the diffuser do its thing. There are all types of diffuser styles, but I like these here and here.

10. Books.
If you or your loved ones still have the attention span for reading, here are some books that caught my eye:

  • For the badass in your life:
You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero (Buy here)
  • For the ambitious Democrat in your life:
What Unites Us by Dan Rather and Elliot Kirschner (Buy here)
  • For the lazy Democrat in your life:
The RBG Workout: How She Stays Strong . . . and You Can Too! by Bryant Johnson (Buy here)
  • For the child in your life:
The Wonderful Things You Will Be by Emily Winfield Martin (Buy here)
  • For the man in your life:
The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman. (Learn more, take a quiz and buy here.)

11. Offensive Teacups
I can't end this list without including something sassy! Need to send a message to your party guests? Want to see your nana spit out her tea on aunt Betty? Set your formal dining table with these babies. Select from standard insults like Shut Up, Go Away, Fuck Off or Shitbird - or customize your own! The world is your rude teacup. Buy here.
