1. Non-network TV
I don't want to sound like a snob (actually, fuck it, I really don't care), but network TV blows*. Thank god for cable. Channels like HBO, Showtime, FX and AMC and streaming sites like Amazon, Hulu and Netflix continue to produce the best shows on TV. It's a fact. Here were some of my faves from 2016:
2. Late Night Hosts
Now more than ever we need our late night comedians to keep us sane and keep us laughing. My favorite to emerge this year is Samantha Bee, but I still love me some Conan, Stephen, Jon Oliver and Bill Maher too.
Women kicked some ass and took some names this year don't you think?? Although she didn't make it across the finish line first, Hillary made us proud; Michelle Obama motivated us; Pantsuit Nation supported us; Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky and Allyson Felix dominated for us in Rio; songwriters like Adele, Beyonce and Lady Gaga moved us and Amy Schumer continued to make us laugh. Rabia Chaudry got Adnan Syed a new trial and there was even an all female "Ghostbusters" reboot. Sisters are doin' it for themselves.
(RIP Carrie Fisher, Florence Henderson, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Gwen Ifill, Harper Lee, Pat Summitt, Nancy Reagan, Patty Duke, Natalie Cole).
4. Dan Rather
How do I love Dan? Let me count the ways...
I put Dan on my list recently and he had to be on this one too. He's back in a big way (if you remember, he was the scapegoat at CBS in 2005 for a story about George W's military service). His commentary and coverage of the 2016 election and other current events is always heartfelt, thoughtful and eloquent and I pick up everything he puts down. Dan for Prez.
5. Beyonce's "I'm Sorry"
I love this so much because it has so many applications. Middle fingers up! Tell him BOY BYE!
She's the queen of the world, my friends, and there are no signs she's slowing down. I saw her live this year and it was transcendental. Just fuckin' brilliant.
7. "Saturday Night Live" (NBC)
Thanks for the laughs this year SNL. Your Trump and Hillary and Bernie make us laugh - even when we feel like crying. Well, we did cry some too, especially during this:
8. The Cubs
As a fan of a team that long struggled to break a World Series curse (go Sox!), I was thrilled to see the Cubs finally break theirs and bring home the trophy. I loved that the whole country was into baseball for a minute too.
9. "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life" (Netflix)
Thrilled they came back to us this year. Wasn't it fun? Psst: I think there will be more.
10. Being bossy and being honest, but also being kind
One of the best things about Americans is the kindness they show one another during times of adversity. We've seen a lot of bad things happen this year but with that we've also seen examples of people being kind and supporting one another. You know my mantra is - and will continue to be - that "bossy is the new black." Being honest and going after what you want are super important for your mental and physical health (especially for women). But being kind while advocating for yourself is crucial. Get what you want, say your peace -- but be kind to others in the process. We all need each other - now more than ever. I think we've seen all a lot of that happen in 2016 - let's keep it going.
Cheers to a happy, healthy, bossy and kind New Year! Let's kick some ass in 2017!
*OK I'll give you "This is Us" and "The Bachelor." Maybe "Life in Pieces" too. But that's it!
